Q:why do you like tsukiyama like he's appealing i guess but i just don't see him "liking" kaneki as part of the appeal
Well, damn. This is gonna be a long answer I guess. First off, I totally understand that some people don’t really interpret Tsukiyama’s actions in the same way I do. Even I admit it’s a biiiit of a stretch, though I believe it’s entirely possible that he feels this way. Here we go.
We can all agree that Tsukiyama is pretty twisted, right? He’s eccentric, and lacks morals in essential areas, and also doesn’t seem to empathize the way most others do. And I came up with the theory that he “categorizes” people. He only has three categories for people. You’re either food, a tool, or useless. Simple as that. And so far, everyone he’s met has fit into those categories for him.
At first, Kaneki fit perfectly into the food category. But that began to change as soon as he decided not to eat him right away. And for the first time, Tsukiyama was confronted with an existence that didn’t fit into any of his three categories. However, just because he may be feeling certain things other than hunger towards Kaneki, doesn’t mean he recognizes what those are. I doubt he’s ever felt anything other than curiosity and hunger. The sort of tenderness he has for Kaneki is different. It doesn’t fit. So his mind just automatically tossed Kaneki into the closest category. Food.
But as the series progresses we see his mindset change. He becomes genuinely concerned for Kaneki. He protects him. In the scene after Kaneki’s mess up, Tsukiyama is the one person who goes up to him and tells him he’s allowed to mess up. That he doesn’t have to be perfect. THIS coming from the person who is the poster child for perfectionists. He even says something that’s probably the closest thing he could get to saying he cares for someone. He offers himself for Kaneki to use. He offers himself, not as a shield, but as a hidden dagger. A weapon. A safety net. A fail safe. Something for Kaneki to fall back on when nothing else works. He offers to dirty his own hands so that Kaneki’s can stay clean and dear Lord if that’s not caring for someone then what is? Would you say that to a tool? To food? To someone useless to you? No. No you wouldn’t.
In the end, we see him desperate. We see him crazy. He literally begs Kaneki not to go. Why? If it was any other time he would have just accompanied him and either A) protected him (to enable Kaneki to grow stronger/tastier) or eaten him if he got himself killed. So what’s different now? It’s because he’s changed (we even see Kaneki acknowledging this when he apologizes). It’s because this time he is 100% certain that Kaneki is going to his death and he doesn’t want that to happen.
Now, has he changed enough to build a “normal” mindset? Hell no. He still only has those three categories. He still has Kaneki in the food category. But is that what he truly feels? I honestly don’t think so.What he feels and what he is able to perceive those feelings as are two completely different things. Is it love? That’s for you to interpret (personally I find it as a mix of caring and obsession). Is it healthy? Fuck no. Is it well written, dynamic, and extremely interesting/compelling? YES.

Q:as far as tg goes i think the entire point of the story was to point out that tragedies don't have happy endings and its also meant to ensue a sense of hopelessness and sorrow.. that's my view on it anyway
i just expected more i guess. there are so many types of tragedies and though a lot of them are seriously nihilistic (life is innately futile/pointless etc.), that doesn’t necessitate that absolutely everything comes to nothing in the end, especially not when the story is basically a catalogue of torture inflicted on the protagonist cause that’s just pure sadism inflicted on the reader. one of the earlier chapters in tg referenced gregor samsa from the metamorphosis. a man who, as most people know, is inexplicably transformed into a giant insect and dies alone, forgotten by his family, the entire story taking place in samsa’s house. but i didn’t read tg with it’s large cast of characters and intricate fleshing out of ghoul abilities and counter weaponry as being quite that type of surreal tragedy. i thought for sure something had to give regarding the current divide between humans and ghouls (for better or worse), with kaneki being sort of a catalyst for that, being himself both human and ghoul. even though kaneki’s life has been horrible and tragic it doesn’t necessarily precipitate his life coming to absolutely nothing in the end. i just don’t get setting up so many characters and institutions like the ghoul investigators and aogiri, or referencing so many back stories, only to essentially abandon all of them. i mean, i thought for sure that amon and kaneki’s interactions were leading to something major, most likely amon expanding his really narrow view of what makes a monster. and usually as far as tragedies go even the antagonists don’t get quite what they want in the end (piss off Iago you dick). idk idk i thought it would amount to more than ->take sweet precious person ->and put them through hell ->torture them extensively->make them question their entire sense of self -> then kill them the end ?? bleh. i’m a nerd shove me in a locker.
It is only when you immerse yourself in the world of a book that you are able to forget just who you are.
